I played hookey from work on Friday and my dad and I went up to Carlisle for the Spring Swap Meet and Car Corral, and I fell in love all over again.
She was sitting there next to one of the restroom buildings, unloved and untouched. Hundreds walked past her but few stopped to gaze. But I did.
She sat there in her radiant glory, proclaiming her prowess to all who would read... A 1983 El Camino... 350 cubic inch LT1 swap... 5 speed conversion... 88k original miles. And suddenly, I could see myself with her... in her... cruising down the highway, windows down, wife beater tight against my skin, chest hair protruding from the top, while my mullet blows in the wind, curly locks flowing out the window and over her gracefully curved B pillar as White Snake blasts through the stereo, serenading us as we drive off into the sunset together.
And then I saw that the owner wanted $9500. CP.

CP indeed. That would be a reasonable price for a 70, but crazy for an 83.

I will give the car this: it was super clean and 88k miles on the chassis. Plus the LT1/5spd swap looked very well done from what I could see, it wasn’t all butchered up.
But I have the same feeling, it’s just too much money for an 83. I think $7500 might be more reasonable, and at $6500 it might have been going home with me. Good think it has that bed cause I’d be sleeping in it.
But I’ve learned that Carlisle is where dreams go to die. Everyone watches Barrett Jackson or Mecums and gets delusions of grandeur. Some of the asking prices there were insane!

They are pretty sweet. Import and Kit is coming up May 15-17... I’d recommend checking that one out for maximum jalop! My dad and I go to a couple every year - usually Spring and Fall swap meets and Truck. Sometimes I go to Import & Kit just to see all the crazy stuff.
Also, that Saturday is the Jalopy Showdown at Latimore Valley. Its just off 15, between Harrisburg and Gettysburg. Its all crazy old school hotrods and rat rods... and the entrants dress up like greasers and pinup girls... and they have an old horse racing track that they hose down to get nice and muddy and then let the old hotrods go make laps. I highly recommend it.

I’m immune to the charms of these things. I think it’s because my great-aunt had one and it was a gutless pile o’crap. I know with the engine swap this one wouldn’t be anemic when it comes to power but that’s my gut reaction to them.

yup they think either that
A, My American car is old and clean therefor a “classic car” and now it’s value has tripled in the last ten years.
or
B, I have X amount of money tied up in a car so, said car is worth even more than X amount.
You probably build that car for the same price or less. Pick up a decent stock non-SS 80’s El Co for 2500-3500, an LT1 and trans for 1000-1200,and off you go with 4800 to spend of everything else. Yes you’d have time and effort tied up into it at that point as well, but half the fun of a car like that is the process of building it.
